Rare is the person who does not love chocolate! North Carolina has many talented artisan chocolatiers. With so many excellent places to choose from here in the Tar Heel State, we only have space feature four chocolate shops (in alphabetical order by name) near our North Carolina Bed and Breakfast Inn members. However, there are certainly more chocolate shops that are equally distinguished in our fine state.
Davidson Chocolate Company (610 Jetton Street, #150 in Davidson)
Growing up in her native Venezuela, Ana watched cooking shows and read books to learn new ways of cooking. While earning her culinary degree from the most prestigious culinary institute in Venezuela, Ana started a successful catering business specializing in cake design, mini desserts, and chocolates that she ran for five years. Then she pursued the American Dream, along with her parents, and relocated to North Carolina. In 2014, she and her family purchased Davidson Chocolate Company from its founders, John and Sue Elliott. In 2018, Davidson Chocolate Company celebrates its tenth anniversary as a business!
French Broad Chocolates (10 S. Lexington Avenue in Asheville)
After a year of studying and playing with chocolate recipes, and serving the good people of Costa Rica, Dan and Jael Rattigan sold their Bread and Chocolate cafe and dessert shop (which was an overwhelming success and it continues to this day).
Moving back to the United States, their new business began out of their home kitchen, selling their chocolates online and at local farmers markets. The demand quickly outgrew the space, and in 2008 French Broad Chocolate Lounge was opened, giving the people of Asheville a haven for indulgence. The Chocolate Lounge expanded to the second and third floors of its home on 10 S. Lexington Ave.
Intent on nurturing connections to the source of their food, French Broad Chocolates imports cacao from our trusted farmers, and transforms it into fine chocolate. In 2012, Dan and Jael’s dream of becoming a bean-to-bar chocolate maker was realized, when they opened French Broad Chocolate Factory & Tasting Room. Read more about their story including the birth of their two sons along the way.
