Great golf is found in North Carolina. The most famous golf course in North Carolina is Pinehurst, No. 2, where the stories of champions and the traditions of championship golf have been created since 1898. Pinehurst is the site of more championships than any other golf course in the country. Every great golfer of the last one hundred years has played this course.
Pinehurst and its surrounding area, collectively known as “the Sandhills,” can rightly be called the “Home of Golf” in the United States. However, the Tar Heel State offers dozens of other terrific tracks to play, including some in the Triangle region of Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and several coastal gems near Wilmington and Sunset Beach. There are also worthy golf courses in and around Greensboro/Winston-Salem and Charlotte.
There’s one final major Carolina golf destination that sizzles with great layouts, especially during the cool summer months. Asheville is the epicenter of all activity in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Situated an hour-and-a-half west of Charlotte, Asheville, and the surrounding communities of Cashiers/Hendersonville and Boone/Linville can certainly boast that it’s the Summertime Golf Capital of the Southeast.
“Golf it’s a game of great odds
You don’t just play the other golfers
You play against yourself
You play the natural surroundings
You play the course designer
The greens keeper and the
Rules of the game
Taking on these odds in North Carolina
Is a unique experience when
You play amid stunning beauty
The game begins to change
The course invites you to conquer it
Picturesque views inspire you
The challenge becomes enjoyment
Its successes become stories
From the highest mountains in the east
To the warm winds on the coast
You’ll find great golf that’s out of the ordinary
If you’re looking for beauty, it’s everywhere
If you looking for challenge, you’ll find it
When you’re ready to play golf on a higher level
Look to North Carolina”
