April brings spring showers and thoughts of annual Earth Day celebrations across North Carolina and all around the world. It is a special time for focused awareness of and appreciation for the magnificence of Earth and our precious environment.
For members of NC Bed and Breakfast & Inns Association, being earth-friendly and cultivating healthy experiences for human and wildlife guests to their properties is a year-round love affair.
Many of our member inns have been awarded the coveted NC Green Travel award. Many have earned honors from Trip Advisor as Green Leaders. You’ll find most of our innkeepers are bird lovers — some have even been certified as Birder-Friendly Businesses and make great places for bird watching.
NCBBI member innkeepers tend to be strong proponents of organic gardening, recycling and composting. You may notice signs in your room to conserve water and turn off lights when you leave a room. Even the small steps add up and can make a difference.
One of the beauty parts of staying at a member B&B vs an impersonal hotel is you get the added bonus of your innkeeper’s insight, advice and attention. No one knows the inn history, grounds and nearby NC attractions like your innkeepers do.
Pick their brains!
Ask what kinds of things they do to attract bees, birds and butterflies to the gardens on their grounds. Ask where they get their local-grown produce – you might even find a farmer’s market open during your stay. Ask their best advice for off-the-beaten path diners and dives the tourists never find. Ask for recipes and cooking tips.
Innkeepers love to share.
