WINDSOR
How about staying in a Windsor, North Carolina bed and breakfast, where the Roanoke and Chowan Rivers cradle this lovely historic town.
It’s all about the history here in Windsor, NC located in Bertie County—let’s take a look: Windsor was founded in 1768 and looks much the same today. Observe the unique architecture of the commercial buildings as well as the homes. Downtown Windsor is on the National Register of Historic Places, in part because of the preservation of so many of their beautiful buildings. A significant destination for those studying genealogy is the Bertie County Courthouse, which contains extensive research materials about northeastern North Carolina ancestors. Another downtown attraction is the Freeman Hotel, which was constructed in 1840 and now houses the Windsor Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center. It is a perfect picture of what hotels were like at the turn of the century.
If you’re in the mood to venture a bit outside of Windsor from your lodging, there’s much to see and do. Hope Plantation is a popular spot. See the Hope Mansion, the King Bazemore House, the Roanoke-Chowan Heritage Center, and the Samuel Cox House, all on the grounds of the Plantation. Fun for the kids can be found at the Livermon Recreational Park and Mini-Zoo. This is just a taste of all there is to take in here in Windsor—and while you’re here, be sure to rest up at one of our NCBBI bed and breakfast inns. You’ll think you’ve stepped back a hundred years! |
